Editor’s Note: Yoga has remarkable holistic, life-long benefits, so that's arguably the best choice for family physical activity (though we might be biased here). Yet whatever you might have access to and is of interest to the whole family, go for it -- what matters most is that family members gain the benefits of physical activity together and connect on an embodied level.

Healthy families don’t achieve physical health by eating healthy alone. Regular exercise and physical activities go a long way toward boosting your family’s health. This article explores the importance of physical activity for healthy families.

Growing up, one’s desire to be a successful and well-rounded person might very well include having a healthy family. When you have your own family, it is time for you to take care of their health. You are in an optimal position to engage your children in physical activity for the betterment of their health.

There are many other benefits associated with physical activity for families. They include:

  • Higher self-esteem
  • Strong bones, joints and muscles
  • Better posture and balance
  • Stronger cardiovascular health
  • Learning new skills
  • Better concentration in school work
  • Improvement in mood

These and other benefits are fundamental reasons to encourage yourself and your children to engage in a healthy families’ program, as often as possible. However, for your children to optimize such opportunities, you also have to convince them to avoid overindulging in sedentary behaviors. Aim to minimize the time they spend doing less physical activities like sitting at a computer, watching TV, or playing video games.

The Benefits of Physical Activities for Healthy Families

A key to healthy family relationships is the physical activity in which that family members engage. This is because participating in these activities helps bring families together and solidify their bonds. Here are some outstanding benefits of family physical activity:

1.  Promotes Good Habits

Participating in healthy families’ programs is a great way to teach your children admirable habits. The threat of obesity is a significant concern among children, and it can be helpful to teach them good nutrition from an early age.

That is not all. The physical exercises of learning how to cycle, play sports, and even simply play with their peers are important for shaping their future behaviors.

Unlike the currently common family pastimes of watching movies and playing indoor games, families can engage in physical exercise. Doing so together could even encourage your children to exercise even when you are not around.

2.  Encourages Family Bonding

Today, families rarely engage in activities that include working together as a team. The excuse is often busy schedules, full of working and studying, among other things. The little time left for bonding is frequently spent watching movies and playing a few games to unwind.

When families engage in physical activity, they experience physical benefits and share priceless bonding time. Family sports and other physical activities bring a spirit of teamwork and enhance communication. These are essential child development skills, best developed at a young  age.

These action-packed activities allow family members to know each other better than they might from sitting together watching movies. For example, playing together with your child enables you to learn about their reactions and interactions with others.

3.  Promotes Teamwork

Importantly, children learn many essential life skills at home. Frequently teaching teamwork skills at home -- though physical activity -- prepares children for life challenges ahead of them.

While schools encourage teamwork, children might not take it seriously if they fail to see it also taught at home. Your kids will believe and follow what you teach them much faster than what they learn out there in the world. Physical exercise helps your child understand the importance of setting goals and achieving them both individually and as a team.

4.  Creates a Platform for Encouragement

Healthy families don’t just enjoy the fun of physical activity -- they also encourageeach other through it. When your child brings out their resilient spirit during training, and seems not to be giving up when one might think they should, it can encourage you to continue working hard as well.

You can also use the opportunity of physical activity to boost your child’s self-esteem if they feel low, for whatever reason. When you allow your children to participate in physical events, you give them a sense of ownership and growth. This is one way to build their self-confidence for the rest of their lives.

Conclusion

Physical activity is also a great way to set a great example for other families, encouraging them to take steps towards greater family health just as you are. It doesn’t take more than investing your time in your children’s well-being. So, would you like to be a part of the change that your family needs?
